The U.S. Department of State announced that effective November 1, 2016, individuals will no longer be allowed to wear glasses for the visa photos. However, other detailed instructions regarding the visa photos are still in effect. The visa application process still requires applicants to submit either digital or hard copy photos. The Department of State recommends having your visa photos taken professionally so that all visa photo requirements are met. If you do decide to take your own photos, please follow the detailed instructions in the Department of State website https://travel.state.gov/content/visas/en/general/photos.html.
The website also provides an online “photo tool” that will enable applicants to confirm if the photo is acceptable for the online visa stamp submission and the DS-160 form. When conducting visa stamp interviews, applicants should prepare several hard copies of their visa stamp photos (2 to 4) because some embassies and consulates will require that they bring them to the nonimmigrant or immigrant interview.
